Our Impact News Local endurance athlete completes 8,848m ‘Everesting’ challenge to support Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance Local endurance athlete Richard O’Connor has completed an ‘Everesting’ challenge on a Dorset hill, climbing the equivalent height of Mount Everest (8,848m) in 18 hours, to raise funds for Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance. Known as the MadMule Everesting Project, the challenge saw Richard complete back-to-back hill climbs over steep ground, through mist and drizzle, until he reached the elevation gain of Mount Everest. Friends, fellow runners and local supporters joined him for sections along the way, helping to keep him going through the night and into the following afternoon. Richard said: “This wasn’t just about the elevation; it was about the power of choice and the strength of our community. When things got difficult, the support from people around me, and knowing we were raising vital funds for Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, kept the engine running.” In the lead-up to the event, Richard trained with local runners and friends who also helped rally support for the fundraiser. Even as temperatures dropped and fatigue set in, disciplined strategy and nutrition kept the project on track, and Richard completed the challenge in under 18 hours - what an amazing achievement! He added: “I choose these challenges to show that with preparation and a supportive community, we can push beyond what we think is possible.” A huge thank you to Richard for choosing to support Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance. He has already raised over £2,500, and donations are still welcome. If you’d like to contribute, you can support his fundraising page here. Get involved Every mission we fly costs around £3,500.
