Yesterday, we had a very special visitor at our airbase - Thomas Yaxley, who arrived on two wheels as part of his incredible Ride4Hugo Airbase Challenge, as he cycles to every air ambulance base in the UK in memory of his brother, Hugo.

In Memory of Hugo

Our crew were the ones who cared for Hugo following a serious road traffic incident in 2020. Sadly, his injuries were too severe, but the time we were able to give his family to say goodbye will forever remain deeply important to them – and to us.

After Hugo sadly passed away, Thomas launched Ride4Hugo, a series of challenges undertaken in his memory. Over the years, Thomas has raised an incredible amount of funds and awareness for our charity, not only in memory of Hugo, but also in memory of his aunt, Helen McCrory OBE, who sadly passed away after her battle with breast cancer.

We are honoured to have been part of Hugo’s story, and we are continually inspired by the strength, dedication, and compassion shown by Thomas and his family.

The Airbase Challenge

Between 31 July and 13 August, Thomas took on the Airbase Challenge, cycling over 2,700km, visiting all 21 UK air ambulance bases (one of them twice), and climbing more than 25,000m in the process. Most of the route was off-road, designed to reflect the tough and remote places air ambulances often reach. He even took a trip across the Irish sea to Northern Ireland to make sure no base was missed.

Thomas’ challenge was done solo and self-supported and is even being submitted for a Guinness World Record.

The Air Base Challenge is one of three events Thomas has taken on this year. 2025 marks five years since Hugo’s accident, and almost five years since the passing of Thomas’ aunt, Helen McCrory OBE. This year’s challenges have been a moving tribute to both of them.

Thank You

So far, Thomas has raised over £7,700 for three amazing charities: Air Ambulances UK, Place2Be and the Sir Hubert von Herkomer Arts Foundation. Today he heads for his final stop – Cornwall Air Ambulance’s base, where he will complete his challenge.

Thank you from all of us at DSAA. We’re inspired by your efforts and incredibly grateful for everything you’ve done.
