Our Impact News What is The Circuit and why is it important? Once you have purchased a defibrillator, there’s one essential step to not forget - registering your device on The Circuit. What is The Circuit The Circuit is the UK’s national defibrillator network. It provides 999 call handlers with a map of all registered defibrillators, enabling them to quickly direct people to the closest available device in an emergency. If a defibrillator isn’t registered on The Circuit, emergency services won’t know it exists, and it can’t be used when it’s needed most. The Circuit: Ensures 999 call handlers can quickly guide people to their nearest defibrillator, enabling early CPR and defibrillation to begin before emergency services arrive. Sends reminders to defibrillator Guardians when pads or batteries are due to expire, or when checks are needed, providing ambulance services with confidence their defibrillators are ready to save a life. What's a defibrillator Guardian? Each defibrillator needs a Guardian. This is a dedicated person responsible for keeping the device “rescue ready.” Guardians carry out simple checks to ensure the defibrillator and cabinet are in good condition, then log their updates on The Circuit. This process helps maintain the network’s accuracy and ensures that when someone dials 999, the device can be found and used without delay. DSAA & The Circuit Through our Life Support initiative, DSAA offers a Defibrillator Package designed to make installation and registration simple. Rosie Cornelius-Light is DSAA’s Fundraising Officer and a key member of the Life Support team. She works closely with groups who have purchased our defibrillator package to support them through the registration process and help ensure that a local Guardian is appointed to take on the role of routine checks and updates. She says: “Cardiac emergencies make up around a quarter of the missions we’re called to, which is why making defibrillators visible to emergency services is so important. Our growing network of Guardians playa huge part in this. They give their time to check defibrillators regularly and keep them 'rescue ready’. Thanks to their support, communities across Dorset and Somerset can trust that their life-saving devices are ready to make a difference when every second counts.” If your community has a defibrillator, check that it’s registered on The Circuit.
