Our Impact News Winter safety tip: what3words From 8-14 December, DSAA is teaming up with what3words for their winter safety campaign. We will be sharing how this simple, free app can make a huge difference in an emergency by enabling you to be located quickly and precisely – wherever you are. Providing critical care across Dorset & Somerset Our critical care service covers two large and varied counties, stretching across everything from national parks and rugged coastlines to quiet country lanes and farmland. However, with this beauty and isolation comes its own unique set of dangers. As winter sets in, shorter days, slippery roads, and unpredictable weather can increase the risk of getting into difficulty, especially in remote or unfamiliar areas. Our crew are tasked to thousands of missions per year. In the event of an emergency, it is essential that emergency services, like ours, can locate you quickly and precisely. Over 80% of the UK’s emergency services are using what3words to locate callers faster and many voluntary search and rescue teams, air ambulance crews and dispatchers now consider it to be an essential tool in the emergency toolbox. How what3words can help you When you call 999, one of the first questions you’ll be asked is, “What’s your location?” This can be hard to answer if you’re lost, disoriented, or far from obvious landmarks, and without an accurate location it can be difficult for emergency services to provide an efficient response. That’s where what3words comes in. What3words divides the whole world into 3 metre squares and assigns each square a unique identifier made up of three words. So, if you find yourself in an emergency in a remote location, you can simply advise your 999 responder the relevant 3 words needed for them to find you. For example, a what3words address will look like this: ///stung.cobbles.needed Ben Channon, Critical Care Practitioner said: “Every second counts in an emergency. Knowing exactly where you are helps us reach you faster. This winter, if you ever need to call 999 in a remote spot, what3words can pinpoint your location, even in poor weather.” Stay safe this winter Don't forget to download the free what3words app and stay safe this winter.
