    Defibrillator Package

Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance Life Support Logo

DSAA have partnered with The Heartbeat Trust UK, to launch a new life-saving automated external defibrillator package for businesses, community groups and organisations. The collaboration means it's easy for you to place a defibrillator on the exterior of your workplace or community building, so if someone suffers a cardiac arrest at your workplace or in your surrounding community, your defibrillator could help to save their life.

The package is perfect for your workplace and your community because it includes:

    • Access to DSAA’s Life Support CPR and Defibrillator awareness sessions
    • Support with ongoing maintenance
    • Help to fundraise the amount needed to pay for it

Why get an automated external defibrillator?

An out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is the ultimate medical emergency and can happen to anyone, at any time. In the UK, around 200 people suffer an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) every day and currently, only 1 in 10 survive. Every minute without CPR and defibrillation reduces a person’s chances of survival by around 10% and the risk of permanent brain damage increases.

Early CPR and early defibrillation can improve a patient’s chances of survival, which is why we want members of our community to have the confidence and skills to deliver early life-saving interventions.

An automated external defibrillator is an easy-to-use medical device that can deliver an electrical shock, or defibrillation, to someone who is in cardiac arrest. It is an essential part of the ‘Chain of Survival’ in trying to save their life. CPR should be given until a defibrillator reaches the person. Currently, not everyone experiencing an OHCA gets immediate CPR and treatment from a defibrillator. However, if both of these treatments are delivered together, we can double the number of people surviving

We simply need more defibrillators in our communities

By placing a defibrillator on the exterior of your workplace or community building, you are increasing the chance of survival for someone suffering a cardiac arrest at work, or in your surrounding community. You will help to play a part in ensuring more lives are saved. Lives just like Jonathan’s.

    Together, we can save lives

We want anyone who suffers a cardiac arrest to receive immediate CPR and to have access to a defibrillator, to ensure that vital treatment can be started whilst help from the ambulance service and DSAA’s Critical Care Team can be organised. As a result of this and other clinical care, there will be fewer avoidable and needless deaths in our communities. Placing a defibrillator in your local community will strengthen the links in the chain of survival for someone who is suffering a cardiac arrest nearby.

    Chain of survival

Our crew brought early advanced care to over 500 people suffering a cardiac arrest in 2022/2023, representing approximately 25% of our incidents for that year. Despite the extraordinary level of medical skill our crew bring to the scene, it's what happens prior to our arrival that can save a life.

Your nearest defibrillator should be within a 3-minute return walk. Where is yours?

What is included in our life-saving defibrillator package?

For £1,750, your employees and community will benefit from:

    • A Zoll Automated Defibrillator – for inexperienced users that will deliver shocks automatically and includes a 7-year warranty.
    • A high-quality polycarbonate heated and branded unlocked external cabinet. This ensures your public access defibrillator is stored safely for when it is needed. The charity branding is highly visible to increase awareness of its presence and ensure it’s recognisable as a clinical device.
    • Through our DSAA Life Support CPR and Defibrillator Awareness Sessions, we will ensure your employees are confident in delivering CPR and how to use a defibrillator. We will also provide you with training resources.
    • Registration – we will help you register your defibrillator with the local ambulance trust and through The Circuit, so 999 operators can direct people to it.
    • Insurance and ease – DSAA will insure the asset against public liability claims and help you order everything you need.

You will support us by nominating a dedicated Guardian:

    • The guardian’s role is to keep the device ‘rescue ready’ and known to 999 call dispatchers. This is an important role which will need to be allocated and agreed before moving forward with the partnership.
    • The guardian will be responsible for undertaking regular checks of the device, which will be submitted to your portal on The Circuit.

    We will support you by:

    • Promoting your good news story – you are doing something amazing for your local community and we want to help you shout about it. Through press releases, news and social media posts, we will help you share the news with our supporters.
    • Understanding your impact – this is a defibrillator for life. You will become a ‘DSAA Life Supporter’ and as a part of this community, we will periodically update you on the difference your support is making.
    • Providing fundraising resources – we will support you with branded collection tins, assist in the creation of an online fundraising page, provide posters, leaflets, fundraising and event advice, to ensure you can hit your fundraising target. When you display your defibrillator, your employees and community will be proud of it and continue to support your fundraising target to ensure the pads/batteries are replaced when they expire.
